Health and Safety in Care Homes for the Elderly

Is anyone able to share a copy of a Health and Safety Policy for a care home or show me where I can get hold of one. I have got the book from the HSE called ' Health and Safety in Care Homes' which is useful but would still be useful to see an example of a written one.
Many Thanks
Ian

Ian,
This is a big subject; our H&S Policy document (which has to straddle uncomfortably between Care Centres and Charity Retailing) is currently about 1Mb in size, and set to grow as I apply audit findings to it.
You need to consider a wide range of H&S issues, especially Manual Handling but also nuts and bolts stuff like housekeeping and so on, in terms of falls prevention. At the same time it's important to balance the need for legal compliance in safety terms with the need for your service users to go about their lives with the minimum restrictions and interference.
If I were you I would start with the National Minimum Standards for Adults and develop you policy outwards from there,
John

It is a big subject and the most difficult is in the Nursing Home environment with the Evacuation training and drills. These can also be particularly sensitive as some residents may have to remain in their rooms until fire service assistance arrives. I found that staff training needs were highest in this area as most instinctively want to remove everybody to the outside world - but this may not be the best option at 2 am in midwinter when most fires seem to happen in such accomodation.
Legionella and water temperature control are also significant risk areas, as are the food hygiene aspects and drugs control and recording. There is great emphasis on manual handling but most of this is now reasonably controlled with the various lifting aids.
It is a vaste area though and the above scratches the surface only. I reached 2 Mb by the way. The HSE document is good but needs to be extended as it cannot cover all risk areas.
email me for a personal conversation if you wish
