Posted By Joe We have been advised by our internal transport providers that the Freight Transport Association has advised that, in the interests of health and safety, trailers should not be towed behind a minibus as in the event of a road traffic accident, the trailer would impede access via the back door of the bus. As an organisation like many others who will utilise the same transport to get equipment and group particpants from point A to B this guidance could have wide ranging resource implications. I am of the view that as long as the mini bus has side access available then there is adequate means of escape available. I have checked with our insurers and they are happy with current practice to continue (at the moment). Has anyone else encountered this issue?

Posted By Tom McGlew Joe, I think the concern may be what would happen if the vehicle rolled over on to its side and removed the side door exit option? It is possible that the trailer could block an exit through the rear doors too.

Posted By Ken Taylor You could try asking the Community Transport Association for their current view on this one. My understanding is that if a vehicle requires an alternative exit it should be readily available for use in an emergency when required for that purpose. Does the trailer have to obstruct the exit?

Posted By JEFFREY SMITH I am interested in any response you have as we (in the Scouts) are constantly towing a trailer behind the minibus' that we use. However, I use the following rule - if, when the trailer is hooked up and there is not enough space to open the back door unimpeded, we don't use that trailer. It means that there could be other problems such as tight turnings, viewing beyond the trailer when towing etc. If there is not enough room it usually means that the 'a' frame of the trailer is set incorrectly too far back (if it is adjustable) or the tow hitch on the van has been set incorrectly too close to the bodywork. I suggest that you get the tow balls checked to see if this is the case, and also measure the length of the 'a' frame to see if it is compatible. In the end, why would towing a trailer on a minibus be any different from towing with a van? With or without a trailer, in the event of an accident, access to one or more doors may be impeded anyway. I thought that most of the windows in a minibus could be forced open/broken for escape in the event of an emergency (although I am prepared to be corrected!) Please let me know of the outcome. Jeff
