Posted By Geoff Norman Is anyone aware where you can buy a hard hat that is similar to a wide-brimmed sun hat, which provides protection against the sun to the front, side and back of the head? Our company has mandated hard hats recently due to specific risks, but individual has been advised to cover up by Doctor due to previous occurrences of skin cancer. They used to wear a wide-brimmed sun hat, similar to the cricketer hats, but this is not practical with a hard hat. Any sensible solutions and assistance taken.

Posted By Jasonjg Hi Geoff At the risk of being shot down. I am sure there is a cowboy type hardhat on th market that meets the standards required but not one of an English nature.

Posted By Raymond Rapp An alternative to a wide brimmed cowboy style hat would be to cover up those exposed facial/neck parts with a desert type cloth (Lawrence of Arabia style) and of course plenty of sun screen. Ray

Posted By John Lewis Geoff During a holiday in Australia at Christmas I (rather sadly) took some interest in a nearby development. At the entrance to site was a little shed with factor 60 sun cream in a pump action gallon drum and a sign that said "No Hat, No Boots, No SPF60, No Job!". They do take it seriously out there, and so to the hat. Most guys on site wore a conventional hard hat with an elasticated disc like brim which slides over the hard hat. In addition, everyone was wearing long sleeve polo type shirts in HiVis yellow/green with reflective stripes as per a UK HiVis vest. SPF of the fabric is of course 60. I asked why the brim was not rigid and was told that "If something hits a rigid brim it'll snap his f*****g neck Mate!" Good point I thought, break his shoulder instead, all down to risk assessment again. Best Regards John

Posted By wesley james mason Liam - them cowboy hats had made me chuckle. Can you imagine walking on site in the UK wearing one of them. I don't think that you would be taken very seriously!!!? But.......a good idea, sadly not needed too often in our climate!
