Dear Folks,
Regular visitors to the forum may know that I was and still am having difficulty in convincing my local Fire Authoirity and the Care Commission into allowing the use of the dorgard device as an interim measure in lieu of the fitting of free swing arm devices to our residential care home doors.
Can I ask for anyone who is using this device (in a residential care setting) to provide me with the name of their organisation, their geographical location, the areas in which it is being used and if it has the support of their local Fire Authority/ Care Commission/ CSCI Office.
Many thanks in advance of comments received.

Can't Dorgard supply you with a list of 'users' in your area?

I have requested this from our supplier, but sometimes you only get one side of a story.

Hi Joe,
We use these at many of our Kent County Council residential/respite homes without any adverse comment(as far as I am aware) I will check with colleagues. But as we are a three star authority, doubt we have had problems, but will check.
Regards, Paul

May I recommend that you speak to Mike Floyd at the FPA. He is a fire door expert and has deep reservations regarding the use of the dorgard device.

I work for MacIntyre, a national charity that provides residential homes and other services for people with learning disabilities.
I find that fire brigade people don't like dorgard but have yet to give me a convicing reaseon not to use them. Buckingham simply say it's their policy to advise against them - but if you push them, their reasons against are that they can get knocked by wheel chairs. Most of the people we support do not use wheel chairs! They also don't seem to trust organisations to have systems for regalar checks on the battery condition. There is also a delay between the alarm going off and the dorgard reacting - if my memory serves me correct this is up to about 30 seconds.
We also have homes in Powys, Kent, Essex, Southampton, Shropshire, Bedfordshire, Eastleigh, Leicestershire, Worcester, Oxfordshire, Cheshire, The Wirrel and Manchester. In most of these cases we get away with using dorgards but I gather - justified within risk assessments - but usually not in 'high risk areas such as kitchens and laundry rooms.
