Posted By el nino Good morning all. I am looking at access to road tankers. Not the very top of the tanker itself but the point at which connections need to be made on ISO tankers. Typical height 1 metre or so. Drivers climb up, make connections, open valves etc and then climb down. Short duration task. No edge protection and small working area. Would I be right in thinking that additional control measures would be impractical and that risk is low to medium? Any one else tackled this issue? El Nino

Posted By john temple Hi Nino Most transport units that carry ISO tanks have a working area at the base of where the driver couples his hose with a step to gain access, you could stipulate that transport units have this minumium criteria. the risk increase with the nature of the product carried and method of discharge, ie PPE RPE in case of a leak from the connections or a failure of the delivery hose (product can be delivered using pressure / pump or gravity). If the tanker is discharging then at some point the driver will have to open a vent coupling to allow air into the tank so it does not implode as the product is delivered, if it is loading you need to let the air out to limit the pressure in the tank, these are usualy on top of the tank & requires top access. ISO tanks have very poor access ladders and rarely have handrails so this is where you get a problem.
