Posted By paul debney i am looking to remove my asbestos roof that covers my garage at home. what are the legal procedures that i have to abide by? the roof is asbestos cement. can i do the work myself or would i need a licensed contractor because asbestos cement is not covered by the licensing regulations. i know i will have to treat the asbestos as special waste.

Posted By Dave Wilson Can do what you like as the Regs and Haz regs do not apply to domestic properties (Private), you do not need a licenced Contractor for cement, however if you get a contractor in then the regs apply to him. You can remove and take to your local landfill and dispose of foc, may be a good idea to inform them before hand or contact them and ask how they would want it brought in.

Posted By Robert K Lewis Talk to your Local authority about their arrangements for disposal by council tax payers. The Landfill sites able to accept this material now are reduced in number since the EC directive has been implemented. It has to go to a licenced Monocell site and not be mixed with any biodegradeable materials otherwise they cannot accept it. It is classed as Non-reactive hazardous waste. If you do mix it with active wastes then I am afraid only tips licenced for Hazardous wastes can receive it and you will find the proverbial rocking horse manure easier to locate. As far as removal is concerned you are not controlled by any of the legislation, just be a good neighbour! Bob

Posted By J Knight Round here people put it with the old fridges under railway bridges and on playgrounds, though I think that may not be the right way to do it... John
