Does anyone out there have any local guidance / procedures for working on on telecom poles both wooden and metalic, from pre equipment checks, fall arrest equipment right through to task commencement

Dan,
don't have anything personally, but have you tried BT or one of the electricity providers in your area. I am sure they must have something in place for this type of work.

The control that always stuck with me was tap the wooden telegraph pole with a sledgehammer prior to climbing. If a hollow sound is produced the pole is rotten.

Dan, I think you'll find that this was an issue that HSE looked at not too long ago in conjunction with the electricity distribution
insustry who climb wooden poles on a daily basis. This resulted in new working methods including fall arrest. If you contact the industry trade body, the Electricity Association at Millbank in London, their H&S section would be able to give you a steer on this I'm sure. Hope this helps.
