Posted By Ian G. Minty The organisation that I work for is currently considering setting up a behavioural based safety observer system on its' construction sites. Do any readers of this forum have any experiences of using this type of system in the construction sector? If you have, I would appreciate any comments please.

Posted By Kieran J Duignan During 4 years working in employers' organisation in construction, I observed how, just as in any other sector, effective behavioural safety depends on educating, training, motivating and rewarding people at all levels to work safely. While levels of subcontracting complicate matters in construction, where contracts managers have the authority and motivation to design, develop and sustain behavioural safety, it becomes part of a company's culture and competitive advantage.

Posted By paul cormack Some groundbreaking work is being pioneered at Stewart Milne Group, following controlled trials one of their Scottish timber frame factories earlier this year. SMG anticipated some of the issues that could have resulted from "lifting in" behavioural based safety systems from other industries. This has provided practical benefit for its observers, and the early experience is encouraging. Stewart Milne's Group Safety Manager may offer more information.

Posted By Ian G. Minty Thanks for the comments so far guys, I actually work for Stewart Milne in the Homes and Construction Divisions and I am looking for practical information from people who have been involved in behavioural safety systems in similar sectors. For example - lessons learned, barriers to overcome etc.
