Posted By peter s knopp In the US there is a standard for balers/compactors - ANSI Z245.5-1997. Does anyone know of a similar UK or EU standard?

Posted By Frank Hallett Peter, have you tried asking BSI? If you would like to let us know why you are seeking a standard we may be able to provide some better focussed pointers. They're inherently potentially lethal items of plant, and many of those that I have come across don't meet the Supply of Machinery [Safety]Regulations; mostly in respect of the Essential Health & Safety Requirements and the prevention of people inadvertently getting dangly bits caught up in the material being put into the compactor &/or the bits that drive the compressive part.. Posted By peter s knopp Thanks Frank, I have been given a safety checklist by my US colleagues for use in Europe, Middle East & Africa, however it is based on the ANSI standard and OSHA requirements. I wanted to ensure that any EU/UK specifics were included in the document for our use. I have heard that Captive or exchange key systems are required, but I have not confirmed that requirement. If you know of anything please let me know Regards

Posted By Frank Hallett Hi Peter The EHSR don't actually specify "captive keys" etc; but if properly instituted can be a major factor in minimising accidents during use - but not normally during maintenance! I would have thought that KCC could have dealth with this internally though. If you're still having trouble, get hold of a copy of PD 5304 - Safe Use of Machinery from BSI; it's extremely useful for all potentially dangerous plant. Sorry, but I don't have access to the BSI Catalogue right now or I could tell you if a directly relevant BS/EN exists. Frank Hallett

Posted By Barry Cooper Peter Contact the Confederation of Paper Industries (CPI). They have produced guidance for the safe use balers. Try their web site.
