Good afternoon
Having just purchased some step ladders for use in the factory, our ladder inspector, very attentative chappy noticed that the ladders did not have a BS but instead had a new EN number, EN14183. Having made some enquiries it appears that this standard does not correlate with the existing BS 2037. Has anyone else come across this or does anyone have any info regarding this particular standard?
PS very flimsy and would not last a week, sending them back to supplier.

Hi Simon
First - congrats on removing the immediate problem by sending the steps back as unsuitable thus demostrating immediate understanding of, and compliance with the WaH Regs.
As for the Bs v the EN; have you asked BSI?

the EN number refers to step type stools and exlude ladders and step ladders which come under EN 131-1:1993
BS 2037:1994 is the most current standard the equivallent en number is as note above
basically what you bought does not constitite as ladders

On the subject of ladders/steps, can anyone provide me with the appropriate legislation reference detailing where domestic grade ladders/steps cannot be used within the workplace? Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.
Don't know if this is of general interest:-
The British Standards for UK ladders are -
BS 2037 - applies to metal ladders (Class 1 and Class 3)
BS EN131 - applies to metal and timber ladders
BS 1129 - applies to timber ladders
EN131 has been recently adopted as a European-wide standard ( known in the UK as BS EN131 ).
Also Came across this reference for EN14183:2003
