I've been advocating that we have fire evacuation drills at our office premises every six months (i.e. twice a year), however historically at some of our premises this has only been done annually.
Now, I'm sure I've seen a twice yearly recommendation somewhere but for the life of me can't remember where - any ideas?

I think you probably saw it in your fire certificate. Most general advice sections state 2 fire evacuation drills per year and where there is shift working it should be two per year per shift.
I have seen once per year stated for low risk office type environments but twice per year is the normal advice

Of course, once Fire Certificates are no longer required, we will have to decide evacuation drill frequencies for ourselves (based on risk assessment).

've just had a quick look at one of the new guidance documents (Draft) which are being introduced as part of the RRO. It states that the fire drill must be carried out at least annually or as determined by your risk assessment and that if you have a high turnover of staff you may need to carry them out more often.

Chapter 17
section 17.7 of the Fire Precautiosn Act 1971
Fire drills should be carried out annually and preferebaly twice a year.
Fairly clear cut instructions I would think.

We had a visit from the local Fire service earlier this year who recommended quarterly practices! We considered this to be excessive because it is an office environment with little turnover of staff.
I suppose it depends on the nature of the work/site, but for us an annual practice should suffice.

I've also recommended some sites have quarterly evacuation drills. This is mainly because the drills I have witnessed have been abysmal. Once there is an improvement in the standard of drills and the time taken to evacuate, then the frequency of drills can be reduced. This should all be part of the fire risk assessment process.

Nigel,
many thanks that sounds like what I was looking for.
All,
Incidentally our fire certificate makes no mention of fire drills or their frequency.
