I have been asked by our press shop manager to carry out risk asessment on a person who only has the use of 1 arm (lost use over a period of time by a form of parkinsons disease). This person works in our press shop which has various forms of metal bashing equipment. Our OH nurse has deemed him fit for limited tasks but the manager is still concerned given the nature of the working enviroment
should I assess the person or the process (i suspect the latter)
1 week in the job so still on a steep learning curve

Hi Mike,
The risk assessment should include both the man and the machine. The design of the machine will have a substantial impact on the likelihood of a person getting hurt. The behavior of the person will also impact the probability of injury. ISO 14121 and ISO 13849-1 provide excellent guidance on this subject.
Contact or office off line for more information.
Kindest regards,
Tom Doyle

Agree with the previous answer - both. Bear in mind that this man should be at no greater risk due to his illness/disability than anyone else. Might also be worth finding out if his problems are likely to worsen - I'm not an expert on parkinsons but I believe this is a progressive disease, therefore any impairments he has now should not be viewed as static - review your assessment regularly enough so his level of protection remains sufficient.
Involve him in the risk assessment process as he will have the best idea of his limitations, and therefore his ability to carry out the tasks he is given.
