Posted By Merv Newman I note that, for the 2005 world conker championship, (Isle of wight, October 9th) competitors will be supplied with protective safety glasses. Oven-baked, vinegar-soaked and painted-concrete conkers will be banned. Sounds like a perfect 10. (or a 6.0 if you are doing it on ice) Merv

Posted By Lynchy Merv Where I went to school it wasn't your eyes that needed protection - no sir'ee! That was the least of your problems - especially if you had a conker that was a bit good and you got a bit big- headed about it! Suddenly, everyone was trying to get you - anywhere! It was just about anything that happened to be within swinging range as a lot of old scores were settled on the conker field - Lynchy

Posted By Martin Allan One "Upside" of the bonkers conkers issue is that it appears to be raising the issue of Risk Assessment of tasks in thwe minds of participants. However, it is a pity that the Assessor has not published his assessment criteria. Perhaps the likelihood of conker fragments impacting on eyes is now very low, (More so now that secret hardening and tempering processes are banned!) However we still apear to be failing to educate many that the trick is to get risks to an acceptable & tolerable low level, not to prevent all risks at the "RISK" of banning harmless pastimes..

Posted By Cr8r Hi Merv Just want to check the rules. I note that oven baking and vinegar soaking are banned. Shame about the old painted concrete trick being found out. However, when I was still aged in single figures, I found the best conker to be a well matured one. I kept the same legendary conker going for three successive years, allowing it to summer under my bed. A sturdy yellow boot lace allowed for extra range, thus minimising the risk of injury to myself and at the same time striking fear into the hearts of my more skillful oponents! Please let me know if re-using the same trusted conker is allowed in the current rules so that I can properly advise my younger daughters.

Posted By Lynne Ratcliffe I believe that this contest has been thoroughly assessed for this year and that the conker hunter gatherers have been out collecting conkers of the same size, shape and quality to prevent use of trusty 'olde faithful', the hunter gatherers will be drilling said conkers and providing string of regulation girth and length! this to enable the 'noble' game to be played on an 'even field'. With the provision of eye protection etc i can only hope that the assessors have also prepared soft ground upon which to fall after imbibing of the old falling down juice upon comprehending the rules! prior to during and after the competition!
