Posted By Brian Jones We are currently, trying to encourage all our staff that are at risk to wear appropriate eye protection. This will be highlighted by the risk assessment or in designated areas. Can anyone help me with some statistics about the level of eye injuries and possible consequences, in industry?

Posted By Merv Newman Statistics of injuries are no b****y use to anyone. The risk of a LTI injury to the average employee is about once every 20 years. Twice in the average working life. And it may never happen to ME ! Why not look at Behavioural Based Safety where, instead of trying to persuade people using the negative consequences of unsafe acts, we try to ensure positive consequences for safe behaviour ? Unfortunately, it never happens. When did anyone in your company remark to someone that they were pleased to see that they were wearing appropriate PPI ? Merv

Posted By Brian Jones Merv, We use the positive aspects as a given, however, when you get a request from members of staff for some statistical information we try and be positive and provide it as requested.

Posted By Andy Petrie Merv, what are you talking about. Statistics are very valuable in these areas. If you'e had a million man hours with no injuries, it's probably not worth splashing out on PPE. I do like your other statistic that we will all have an LTI once every 20 years. I reckon that if I have a couple now then I'm sorted for the rest of my working life, I will never have to worry about safety ever again as I will have had my accidents!
