A friend of mine is considering packing up computing and re-training to become an outdoor adventure instructor. He is well versed in outdoor safety having been part of a mountain rescue team for some years. However, as another string to his bow he would like to go in with some safety expertise as well.
My question is simple, are there any specific H&S qualifications for this sector of our work? Any leads will be much appreciated.
Best regards
John

There is no specific legal requirement other than the usual 'competence' requirement. If your friend wants to become an outdoor activities instructor then he needs to get trained as such and that will include elements of H&S.Your friend should contact somewhere like Plas-y-Brenin for details of courses.
By the way. Does your friend realise how badly paid such work is? I get invloved in lots of outdoor activities and looked into becoming an instructor but it's so badly paid I'll stick to it as a hobby thank-you!

There are various categories of mountain leader qualification so I would be fairly confident that your colleague is already well versed on the levels of qualification. As regards outdoor adventurous activities there is often a national governing body so consult with them individually. Duke of Edinburgh have some fairly detailed requirements and your local contact is likely to be very helpful.

There is no offical qualification for instructors that I am aware of, however if the adventure centre has access to water sports then either a BCU British Canoe Union or RYA Royal Yachting Association qualification along with his experience on mountains would help to establish competence.

The Duke of Ed's along with Scouting, Guiding, Boy's Brigade, Cadets etc all require a certificate of competence, usually given out by a recognised authority or person, also qualified to teach/instruct in particular areas.
Prior to undertaking any of these courses, paperwork and previous experience is looked into and judgements made as to whether anything else would count as exemptions from any of the training.
It can take some time to get 'qualified' as most of the courses are booked up by the youth groups and their persons trying to get the qualifications in order to take kiddies out and about (including I!!)

To get work in outdoor activities your friend will need to complete qualifications from several of the National Governing Bodies. Most inland instructors have, walking, climbing, canoeing and caving qualifications as outdoor centres tend to offer all of these.
British Mountaineering Council - MLTB for walking and climbing
http://www.thebmc.co.uk/safety/boards/mltb.htm
British Canoe Union
British Caving Association
The walking and climbing courses are in 2 parts, training and assessment. You need to get experience preferrably of leading groups in between. I found my local YHA activity centre were very helpful and let me assist their instructors to gain log book experience.
He will need a first aid course to validate his qualifications, the REC - Remote Emergency Care courses are best suited and recognised by the National Governing Bodies.
Certificates of competence from scouts or others probably won't cut it. Scouts run their own competency scheme, it mirrors the National Governing Body schemes but is not transferrable. E.g if you have an ML you are automatically competent for scouts, but not the other way round.
Good luck to your friend i've been tempted myself i just need a private income from somewhere to pay the bills.
