Posted By Steven I have been asked to help with an Environmental Risk Assessment for a site and I am looking for some advice or pointed in the right direction for information as I have some knowledge in this field and the site but am no expert. What I am looking for is a series of questions that I should be asking when doing the assessment or if someone has a risk assessment that they would send for me so I can get an idea into what I should be looking for. It is for a small printing company so water based ink and solvents are the main substances stored on site. Some of the questions I have come up with so far are: 1. What other substances are stored on site and in what quantity? 2. Are these substances hazardous? 3. What waste products/substances are produced on site? 4. What facilities are used for storing waste substances? 5. Who takes the waste away, how do they transport it, where do they take it, have they a license, is the site they take it too licensed? 6. What happens when there is a spillage of a substance? 7. What spill kits do we have? 8. Where are the drains on site and where do they lead too? 9. What quantity of waste is produced? Am I heading in the right direction? Your comments are appreciated. Steve

Posted By Kate O'Neill Maybe disposal of contaminated pretective clothing, used spill kit materials etc is something you have not thought of yet. Also containment in storage areas and also in the event of a spill of new and used inks/ chemicals, Are requirements such as drain covers, booms on hand? is environmental and safety awareness training available at induction and at regular intervals. That's all off the top of my head.

Posted By Smiff The model that forms the basis of all my environmental assessments is Source->Pathway->Receptor. Once I'd twigged that I found it so easy to see the process of pollution. Make up a matrix of the three elements, including the environmental media of air, water and soil, and where you can demonstrate a linkage, you have a significant risk. You are on the right lines with your questions, e.g. sources: chemicals, pathways: drains, Receptors: controlled waters, public etc.
