How do you go about getting a licence to do this? only for Asbestos Waste?

Do you have to be accredited to this WAMITAB Qualification etc.

Hi Dave,

The operator would need to apply, in writing with fee, to the Environment Agency (England and Wales) or SEPA (Scotland) for a 'Waste Mangement Licence.

To obtain a licence the operator must be a 'fit and proper person'. This means the operator has not been convicted of a prescribed environmental offence and can demonstarte technical competence. In order to demonstate technical competence the operator must hold a Certificate of Technical Competence (CoTC)from the Waste Management Industry Training Advisory Board (WAMITAB), for the relevant type of waste management facility. Along with this the operator must also make adequate financial provisions for the operation of the facility.

On top of this if you are going to transport the waste you will be required to register with the EA/SEPA as a licensed wate carrier.

Hope this helps.

Regards,

Neil

Already have the Waste carriers Licence, getting the WAMITAB bit should be OK as well, but is there any special precautions or site environmental issues, planning etc which need to be considered, or where can I find out!
We are looking to start a waste transfer station purely for Asbestos Waste, we are on an industrial site.

Any ideas!

Hi Dave,

Their is a Guidance Note available from EA/SEPA, (WMP) 4, which may give extra info.

I should think for a new Hazardous Waste site their should be a pretty onerous planning protocol with the Local Authority and EA/SEPA. However, any further info I could give would be outside my competence.

If you have the main aspects of competence in place it may b e worth speaking to a Envirinmental Management Consulatant. IEMA may be worth contacting for a list of competent people in your area.

Good look in your endeavours.

Neil
