Some employees smoke, some don't.
The non-smokers want it banned on the premises.
I do not want to allow extra breaks and designated areas just for the smokers.
Where do I go with this?

This will always be a bone of contention. But you don't say what sort of premises and where people are smoking so it is hard to point you in the right direction. Are there currently any facilities for smoking eg separate break areas? How many smoke and how many don't?

Round in circles to start with!
Try www.ash.org.uk for advice and draft policies, etc.

You do not say where your premises is, it is therefore worthwhile being aware that it will be banned in all enclosed workplaces within Scotland from March 2006.

He's based in Willenhall, West Midlands - so Scotland doesn't apply there.

I think the idea is to put everything in black and white, whereby smoker have to much with safety rules in working enviroment. Moreover companies should make sure that smoker are providade with a place to do their smoking.

My company has recently put a total ban on smoking in or around the premises.
If someone wishes to smoke, they may in their own car in their break time. From a health and safety point, several good things have come from this -
1. Housekeeping and fire:
no cigarette ends in or around doorways (smokers couldn't be bothered to use the wall-mounted ashtrays)
2. Passive smoking:
no smoke wafting into offices
3. Health:
and quite a few staff have given up!

as a smoker our company policy is quite simple in your own office with the door shut and the window open, non smokers are all happy with this smoking personnel are all happy with this.
Whilst i can undestand peoples attitude toward us smokers, we are all addicted to a drug and we don't all have the willpower or support to give up.
Get both sides together and thrash out a plan that eveyone will be happy with, also if it is possible get support from the non smokers for those smokers that would like to quit.
Regards
MAM
