Posted By Nigel Hammond Rather than muddy the other thread on smoking, I thought I'd ask my question separately. I havn't got any statistical proof but based on what I see, it seems to be mainly young women who smoke. Why is this? Why do they do it? They know it makes them smell awful, gives them ashtray breath, wrinkles, heart disease, amputation following severe thrombosis and obviously cancer, foetal damage, harmful for children and causes fires, causes severe loss of money to pay for fags etc etc. So why do they do it?? What is their motivation??

Posted By Cr8r Nigel Everyone knows the answer to this - it's cos it makes them look big and clever and all grown up. That's what I thought when I was a stupid teenager. It's only years later when you realise how hard it is to get off the things and everthing you said is absolutely true!

Posted By renown Can't give you the answer. My teenage daughter (16 going on 26) smokes, despite me having a heart attack several years ago and quitting. All her mates smoke - parental advice is not heeded - what do we know, warnings on the cigarette packets are not heeded. Could be because it looks cool, or just rebelling against us oldies. Hopefully before she gets much older she will realise the dangers. I despair!!

Posted By jackw. Same reason as they seem to drink more than they used too, use foul and abusive language more than they used too, are much more violent and are much more likely to engage in physical attacks than they used too. equality of course. Ok I know it's not that simple. wish I did know why but it is very clear that these are the current trends amongst many young women. I for one find it a very worrying trend. men have always been buffoons.. seems like now we can't rely on woman stabilising society as they once did!!!!!!!!!!

Posted By Mike Craven "smell awful...ashtray breath...wrinkles...heart disease....severe thrombosis...causes fires. Cripes! If that Kate Moss ever comes knocking on my door, I'll tell her I'm not interested!!! Never been a smoker myself and agree with much of what has been said. Information and education is important, but would suggest that presentation and delivery of the message (by the right people) is important. The young women we are all giving our opinions on are unlikely to be influenced by what many of us have to say. Mike
