Posted By Bill Newton I am looking for a career change and have recently been looking into vacancies for asbestos surveyers. I would like to know what qualifications people would recommend. Most vacancies I have seen require some experience in the industry but people must start somewhere. Would it be enough to gain a P402 and try and get a junoir position? I have a degree in Geology which I feel will be a good background but is not specific so I appreciate a specilaised qualification will be needed as well. I appreciate qualifications will not guarantee a job but I feel I have other qualities to offer as well so I am interested in the specific qualifications needed for these roles. Thanks in advance Bill Newton

Posted By A Cathro Hi Bill, RICS (Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors) and ARCA (Asbestos Removal Contractors Association) have joined forces to found the National Individual Asbestos Certification Scheme (NIACS) Info came to me in the post today. Training courses are running so check their web pages. You may have to do the P402 course first but they will advise. Andy

Posted By Salus NIACS a bit like supermarkets that set themselves up to control the market, get rid of the corner shops and control whats left with your own prices contractors who have paid a fee to become a member.(nice little earner) The association control the training (and franchise it out, nice little earner) membership contractors set their own prices. how easy is it to get asbestos insurance if you are NIACS? how difficult if you have not? just your P402 if you were a company or better still a county, district council, housing association (plenty of money here to spend, it's not mine)and did not fully understand the word competency who would you employ to carry out the work.

Posted By Dave Wilson P402 is a start, will take 6 months minimum from BIOH, NIACS (ARCA & RICS) and ABICS (ACAD & UKAS) have recently put these schemes together so that one man bands or small companies who cannot afford UKAS etc can get some sort of 'accreditation' which if you join, will have to be audited etc annually and will be eligible for reduced rate insurance. Alternatively you can get employement with a 'UKAS' accredited surveying company and get your experience that way. However I must say that the some of the Asbestos surveyors out there are 'raw' and are very inexperienced especially if they have not been 'mentored' in some way. That said some professioanl RICS people do not have a scooby do! Geology degree brills should do well but what do you know about the built environment.

Posted By Stephen R Robinson To be honest, it is a better idea to approach an Asbestos company before you get your P402. There are loads of them around and they recruit all the time. They will then provide you with your training. Don't pay for it yourself. And don't join an Institution just yet, waste of time and money. There are various recruitment consultants that will take your CV and pass it onto various companys, Index have been good for us. You will get offers quickly, (not every surveyor has a degree), and even though your intial salary may seem poor, once you get your P402, (and later your 401, 403,4, 5 etc) you can look forward to a decent income. Feel free to mention any offers here, probably most of us have been there before.

Posted By Mark Simpson You might baulk at the idea Bill, but have you considered in the short term, doing some asbestos removal work for a licensed removal contractor? You may get your 3 day asbestos operative course funded & will be put through the medical that you will also need. The hands on experience will be invaluable & give you an advantage over an analyst with the same academic or vocational qualifications. Mark
