Seems a paltry sum for the loss of human life. Thoughts anyone.

That figure only pertains to the fines though, it doesn't cover the average sums of any awards for compensation due to private prosecution by relatives/ next of kin.
Still, I agree that the sum is pretty insulting.

I'm afraid that does not count for much. Claims for compensation come from the company's insurance whereas fines from prosecution by the HSE have to be paid from the company's own finaces. Therefore, the fine is the only one that has substantial impact on the company (yes I know insurance premiums rise but not to the same extent).

Not only is it a small amount, I have known much less; and there are many massive fines for pollution offences [not that pollution is not important but killing someone would seem a much more serious crime] One of the problems is that the fines in lower courts are set too low in the legislation, hence the courts have limits in lower sentencing!!
