Please can I have your professional opinion on the following:
We are getting a company in to erect a communication mast between 2 sites and they have asked us to provide a lifting platform which we will hire from a hire company. We will be having a meeting to ensure that their employees have the correct training to use the platform, but I am not aware if there is a training course for these platforms.
Also what are the insurance implications for their employees working on equipment supplied by us?
Your opinions and advice will be greatly appreciated.
Steve

My immediate thoughts are to ask why they can't hire the equipment themselves and hire trained professionals use the lifting platform, or to ensure they use their own staff trained in using the equipment. Why do they want you to do the hiring for them if they are the contractors?

That would seem a fair question. If you use a company such as Nationwide they are usually happy to give training to the users on delivery of the equipment.

Steven,
I personally would be wary about supplying contractors with ANY equipment, let alone equipment that they may not be competent to use. By providing them with this kit you are certainly increasing your liability if there were to be an accident through failure of the equipment or any training provided.
I would also be questioning whether or not the contractor was competent to undertake the installation work if they cannot access the appropriate equipment themselves.

Hi,
My first suggestion would be to look at the 'Versatower' range of masts, these can go up to around 120ft but have the benefit of being able to be winched down so that all antenna/cable etc work can be undertaken at ground level. If this cannot be done for some reason, then I would have a chat with your Insurance Co first, as they will be very unhappy if the Contractor does not have their own insurance to cover any accidents, (they will also lump your next premium up as well?) if the Contractor has asked 'you' to hire the equipment, I would suggest you look for another contractor who specialise in mast erection, it is not just the erecting of the mast, but even more important, how it is going to be fixed to the ground so it does not come crashing down !!
Regards
John
