Hi All,
We have a steam boiler which operates at 240psi and I am told that it needs to be constantly "manned" and therefore must be turned off over night.
In practice, this is what we do, but I can't find any information on this in any guidance material and would like to know if this is required should our operations change in the future.
Many Thanks,
Scott

You should look at the Pressure Systems and Transportable Gas Container Regulations for advice on owning and operating a presure system, as your boiler will come under these regs. Which are appropriate for boilers/presure systems over 250bar/litres capacity. I believe there are also guidelines for operating Automatic boilers and having them report to a fully manned control room. 240psi is a lot of pressure to deal with.

The ACoP to the 'new' regulations - 'The Pressure Systems Safety Regulations 2000' is entitled "Safety of pressure systems" L122 from HSE Books. This supercedes the aforementioned Regulations and Transportable Gas Containers are now dealt with separately. Knowledge of that ACoP will help a competent person determine what the levels of risk are on the boiler, taking account of the manufacturer's operating information and instructions (which you need to read and understand), to determine what frequency should be applied to examinations according to a 'written scheme'. To get the right advice you need to discuss your concerns with your competent person (examining) who will be from your engineering examination company or 'insurance inspector'.
The question as to whether the boiler needs manning or not will depend on what is deemed suitable in the written scheme, which will also state the required maintenance and periodicity, safe operating limits etc. Decisions like this should not be taken lightly and competent advice always sought.
If you have further specific details, I may be able to add to this.
Regards, George
