Hi all,
I put this thread on the members forum but had no resposes-I was wondering what people thought-especially in light of the Radio 2 programme the other day.
I had a thought earlier and feel that I should make the most of it as they don't happen very often.
In this world of reality TV programmes taking us into the worlds of the fire service, Police, blues and twos and puting us into the police chases etc etc has anyone considered contacting the BBC or Discovery Channel to see if they might be interested in coming out with a safety professional and seeing "sensible" health and safety in action.
Maybe Lawrence may wish to take this further with a view to improving our public image. What better way to give people the correct impression of us as a profession rather than a bunch of buerocratic jobs worths. I dont know how it would work in practice but I think the idea is sound-just have to find someone with the balls to pull it off and a company who is prepared to possibly air its dirty washing in public. Thats my thought for the day anyway.
Cheers.
Calum.

Thank you John-I thought it was a beauty too.......
Now lets see if someone actually has the onions to actually volunteer-don't think I would want the gig to be honest....

The problem with your suggestion Calum is that it is far too sensible. Programme makers want something that is contentious and the more unpopular with society the better. Hence the term infotainment. Now if Cutting Edge were to make a programme I dare not think what extremities they might include.

They have made successful programmes about Environmental Officers (Life of Grime was it?) so why not H&S Inspectors. Some programmes kind of touch on this issue like the Seconds from Disaster and Air Crash Investigations.
Maybe Clarkson could be forced to present it ...?

And the problem with Life of Grime is that it presented a distorted view of the work of EHPs. Many EHPs believe it helped contribute to the decline in students wanted to go into to job because it all seemed to be about cleaning out houses lived in by mad old people or unblocking s**t from drains. The more interesting and exciting stuff that Environmental Health Officers do themselves enforcing public health legislation didn't get a proper airing. I suspect the chances of a documentary giving a fair reflection of "sensible" H&S work are equally limited - especially as we don't seem able to agree among ourselves what is sensible H&S.

I think this could be the start of an interesting debate.
I remember there was a documentary on the TV where an HSE inspector (lady) was followed while she looked at construction sites etc. It was quite interesting but gave the enforcement view as opposed to the advisor view which should be slightly less ar*e kicker and more encouragement. I can see Ray's point about this being too sensible but I think a lot would depend on the format of the programme and the individuals involved. It would be in-appropriate to have a series like Life of Grime-probably better to do a one off hour documentary following a number of H&S professionals while they go about their daily chores.
I would be interested to hear the IOSH view on this so perhaps someone would like to comment from our institute such as Hazel on whether it is viable or not

Another alternative is that IOSH could fund a pilot, made with the assistance and input of the membership to act as a little promotional film for the profession, but also to see if there is any interest from programme makers in producing a full-length documentary.
