Could anybody with logistics/transport experience give me info on what i will need to put in place regarding working at heights in a HGV workshop with one pit.
Our engineers have to work on the roofs of trailers which are 14ft 6ins high and there is not enough room for a tower scaffold.
Any ideas.

silly idea really but what about inflatable air bags to cushion any falls from the roof of the cab.

Why cant you fit in a Tower ??
You can always use a ladder as "a means of access" but not work from, but you will have to make sure that measures are in places to prevent persons falling from the roof.
Could you not run a high-level rail where the engineers can hook a safety harness onto?

Neil,
Just an idea but could you not fit a spanset type system to the centre of the trailers when they are being worked on, running back to front then supply your workers with harnessess and fall restraint lanyards, (and of course the appropriate training)

don't forget that when planning working at height activities to use the hierarchy of working at height.
In brief:
1)avoid working at height
2)use an existing place of work
3)use a work platform such as scaffold, MEWP, scaffold tower
4)mitigate the effects of a fall (air bags, crash deck, netting)
5)provide additional measures to prevent the fall (harness, fall arrest or fall restraint)
as a last resort, ladders for short duration, low risk work.
Do forget the basics, risk asses the activity first.

Neil, could you please identify exactly why it isn't possible to fit a tower? I assume that it is to do with lack of room in some context but wouls appreciate further info in order to provide a better focussed response.
If you would prefer to respond directly, please do so by clicking on my name on the post.
