The fire alarm has not worked in my factory for a few years. I have had it fixed whilst my boss is away ill. As I have spent even more of his money, he is not happy with me again. Is it a legal requirement to have a working fire alarm? We are a factory with 20 workers and a few office staff.

Hi Nic,
You need to have a means of raising the alarm. This could be an alarm system, a hand operated bell or by someone shouting "Fire!".
I would have thought in a relatively noisy environment (I assume) a proper alarm system would be required to ensure that it is heard by everyone.

Indeed, this is a busy factory which generates a degree of noise and there are some segregated areas where a human shout would simply not be heard.

If you check with your insurers, you will probably find you not only need a fire alarm, but that it needs to maintained to the relevant standard (BS5389?)for the insurance to be valid!
Also, i have a grey cell that says that something like 40% of business never recover after a serious fire. so if your boss owns the place, this might just alter his perception of protection!
