Posted By nic smith The fire alarm has not worked in my factory for a few years. I have had it fixed whilst my boss is away ill. As I have spent even more of his money, he is not happy with me again. Is it a legal requirement to have a working fire alarm? We are a factory with 20 workers and a few office staff.

Posted By Alan Hoskins Hi Nic, You need to have a means of raising the alarm. This could be an alarm system, a hand operated bell or by someone shouting "Fire!". I would have thought in a relatively noisy environment (I assume) a proper alarm system would be required to ensure that it is heard by everyone. Alan

Posted By nic smith Indeed, this is a busy factory which generates a degree of noise and there are some segregated areas where a human shout would simply not be heard.

Posted By Fred Pratley If you check with your insurers, you will probably find you not only need a fire alarm, but that it needs to maintained to the relevant standard (BS5389?)for the insurance to be valid! Also, i have a grey cell that says that something like 40% of business never recover after a serious fire. so if your boss owns the place, this might just alter his perception of protection!

Posted By Frank Hallett Nic, would it be fair to assume that your boss has absolutely no idea of his duties under the FP[W] Regs? Frank Hallett
