Posted By Stewart Fullarton Just after a bit of advice,
We have an empty building which is not used by anyone at all. It is just sitting empty waiting to be sold on.
Do wee need to maintain the fire alarm system and the extinguishers even though it is empty, the reson for this is cost reduction as the building may be empty for some time.
Would it be sufficent to have the alarm and extinguishers tested / maintained just prior to sale.
I am confident that the alarm is in working condidtion but would not be heard by anyone even if it was to go off as the building is un manned.
Any thoughts would be much appreciated.
Stewart.

Posted By TBC The fire alarm is to warn the occupants of the danger of a fire. No occupants - no need for the alarm. Insurance may think differently though, if the alarm is linked to a call centre who would send the Fire and Rescue Services around and save the building. Again the extinguishers are purely for first aid fire fighting or for use in escaping from entrapment in a building. You will have to check with your insurers and get their word on what you can do without invalidating your cover.
Hope it helps.

Posted By shaun mckeever Fire alarms are not necessarily to warn occupants. It may be a property protection system i.e. P1 or P2. If so they may need to be maintained.
