Posted By srd I know that an accumulation of paper dust around a printing press or inside an extraction system presents a risk of explosion, but are there any known health risks associated with paper dust? I've trawled the internet and have found lots of references to paper dust, but non actually pinpoint it directly as a health risk. Any ideas please? Stephen.

Posted By Adrian Watson It depends on the types and grades of paper. Papers may be coated or retain contain residual chemicals that have not been washed off during the manufacturing process. Paper cutting and processing will generate paper fibres, that may cause rhinitis, bronchitis or asthma depending upon where they are trapped in the respiratory tract. It should be noted that there is no standards for paper dust. furthermore, MDHS 14/3 is not applicable to the monitoring of paper fibres, because they are fibres and not dusts. As such their deposition dynamics will be different. Regards Adrian Watson Registered Occupational Hygienist
