Posted By Lorraine Shuker Am hoping that someone with more practical expereince of applying the Workplace regs can help me answer these questions. First: Am trying to calculate the total volume of rooms so that the 11 cubic metres per person priciple can be applied to arrive at a maximum capacity figure. We are an old converted mill building so our work areas are not simple rectangles and have odd shapes. If a part of the room is effectively a corridor or could not physically accomodate a desk because of its awkward shape or the floor is slanted do I include it in the total volume of the room. Second: Where you are counting number of sanitary facilites can you count a unisex toilet twice. So for example 4 male WCs 4 female WCs and one unisex WCs does that mean up to 100 men AND 100 women? Third: How much space per person should be allowed for rest/break areas? Hopefully yours

Posted By J Knight Hi Lorraine, Though I'm sure somebody will cite precedent or HSE guidance I'm just going to quote my own rule of thumb. I wouldn't include 'unnocupiable' space; if you have a room 50cm wide, 22m long and 1m high it wouldn't house one person though it would be 11cum in total, John

Posted By David A Jones Lorraine, I would take the following stance: Occupiable space - don't include walkways and unusable space e.g. storage areas (e.g. cupboards) Sanitary facilties - don't double count, but you can apportion the allowance from unisex toilets to identify whether more need to be provided Rest/break areas - I wouldn't base the space on an allowance per person, but consider what usage is likely to be at any one time and design accordingly. Hope this is of some help.
