What have you done to upset people no responses? Must admit it quite a big question you have posed. I would strongly recommend you purchase L8 its only £8.00 after all, but in the interim I will try and summarise.
Legionella control like everything else is about risk assessment. The ACOP/Guidance document gives advice identification and assessment of the risk. There is guidance on the types of equipment associated with the risk, eg. Cooling towers/evaporative condensers as well as hot and cold water systems, as well as issues associated with each. It then goes on to give advice on controlling the risks and monitoring to be undertaken, this include when microbiological monitoring is (and is not) appropriate. Unfortunately some insurance companies now seem to be demanding testing in all areas, even where L8 would suggest its not needed.
As for the cost of any microbiological monitoring, I would always look for an approved lab (UKAS accredited or similar) and generally speaking they seam to charge similar prices (not that I am suggesting any monopoly or price fixing).
Hope that was the type of thing you were looking for. Good Luck.
Brian.

Posted By Nigel Evans This is one of the areas where companies seem to be getting ripped off. The ACOP states that Legionella testing is not required routinely for hot and cold water systems (as you get it free from the water supply company). Also most testing carried out only counts the total bugs in the system and does not differentiate between Legionella bugs or others.
I believe this in one area where commerce and industry are spending millions of £ unnecessarily, the HSE could have more of a role in advising businesses that this is not required routinely for hot and cold water systems.

Posted By colin huskisson AWMSoc AIIRSM In response to your looking for a reputable company to undertake the management of legionella within your premises it is advisable to use a company which is registered under the code of conduct. You can access the database, which lists all companies alphabetically
