Posted By David A Jones Similar issue but not exactly the same. In a previous job the company I worked for had retail concessions in highstreet retail premises. These concessions were located in the main window by the front door. As is usual with such highstreet retail premises they like to keep the front doors open. In winter this led to some cases of very low temperatures in our concessions - the local EHO became involved at a couple of our stores (different EHO departments) and insisted that we take measures to improve the situation, with an aim of ideally achieving 16 deg. C

Posted By lewes Hi David J Are we saying that because a 'Comfortable Temperature' wasn’t achievable on account of the frequent air movement the LA said a minimum temperature of 16deg.C was required?? Lewes

Posted By ian milne Question? Does the company keep the temperature down to encourage workers to work and to save money, or prevent damage to foodstock (hygiene conditions). If it is earlier, they must raise the temperature or provide suitable clothing. If it is the latter, they must provide suitable clothing i.e. gloves and jackets and fatigue breaks etc. I believe that this is common practice in that industry where they are frequent migrant workers in/out the organisation where staff care is not what it should be (even from the supposed various market leaders). I agree, EHO cover this industry and can be encouraged to be involved, especially it this has been raised and ignored.

Posted By Nina Unfortunately, although this company bragg about their fantastic customer service their treatment to their stuff is nothing short of disgusting! they are provided with a certain amount of clothing but not enough for this weather and working in a department other than the frozen section he shouldn't really be that cold to need gloves!

Posted By ian milne 1) Has any concerned member of staff or public sent in an anon call to EHO if it is really that bad. There may be other problems around the corner. In fact, is there any EHO/HSE reading this with interest and wondering which location in the country it is from. My other half fell of one of those faulty daleks but hey, why listen to a safety officer just because he's her husband (or wife)eh!. It magicaly got fixed after that. Ian
