Morning All,
I have been given the task of promoting a positive H & S culture in my workplace which is a large organiation. I realise this is a huge undertaking but for starters I want to raise the profile of H&S, let people who we are and what we do.I plan to run small campaigns highlighting current affairs mirrored in what the HSE run such as slips, trips and falls campaign.
Any info on where to get promotional items apart from the HSE or any other bright ideas to help me out.
Much appreciated

Do a monthly toolbox talk TBT. Put it on the notice board. Ask for any suggestions for subjects to be covered. Get those who have read the TBT to sign as confirmation that it has been read. Its a good start. Remeber to aim it at the right height. ie not too technical but with a light sense of humour plent of pictures and make them topical. For the festive period our is safe use of vehicles. You know drink drivin, winter conditions and regular checks etc. Hope this helps

Are your Directors involved ?
If not get them to also participate and talk about it face to face with managers and the guys on the shop floor.
Find your champions in the workplace and increase participation ,follow up with the Directors awarding the prizes (whatever)

My God, what are you asking ? If you want a "positive safety culture" then you are going to have to fight against two centuries of "negative safety culture".
"Negative safety" is when you audit an area and you come across a contractor who is wearing all of the required PPE but has a power cable crossing the walkway. How do you react ? If you are like most of us your first comments are about the cable. The contractor is criticised. He/she resents that. He/she resents you. He/she resents "safety". You are criticising her/him for "not being good enough"
Positive safety is when you congratulate him/her for being "almost perfect".
I send my auditors out with the brief FIRST to recognise, remark, reward at least three "positives". Then they can discuss how to do even better.
When interviewing Directors, managers, supervisors, I do not start by asking about safety problem areas. My FIRST question is always "What have you (emphasise the "you") done lately to improve safety in your area ? ) after a slight boggle they can usually come up with some success for which you can show your appreciation or even admiration.
Now they are on your side. All the defensive, self-protecting attitudes fall away and they will freely tell you about all the sorts of problems that prevent them from working as safely as they would like to.
I will freely admit that it is a technique which allows me to learn what the real safety culture of the company is. And it works.
Merv (trust me, I'm a consultant) CMIOSH (just trying it on for size -does my head look big in this ? )

LOL yes it does look big Merv J/K.
I understand your concerns and yes there are three centuries of culture to break down ,but it is worth it in the end.
It actually makes the Senior Management TALK to the people on the ground ,of course there is what is happening here are we shutting down thing that always goes through the mind or Safety ,yeah rrrright they are they last that should talk. But it is always good to get them invovled even if it is kicking and screaming along the way and it dooes make the SP role a little easier.
Remember Behavioural safety !!!!!!

1. Take actions to link safe behaviour, and improvements that support it, with
a. the mission statement of the enterprise
b. annual performance appraisals of each employee
2. Begin to repair divisions created in the twentieth century between 'HR' and 'OSH', as in reality they're two sides of the same process, now written and spoken in different languages, too often with lack of mutual understanding.

If you haven't already got it, the first thing you need to do is to get the Directors fully on board - if you achieve this they will become active in driving health and safety from above and can be prompted by the health and safety specialists as to the sort of issues they should be concerned about.
Don't expect things to change overnight - but if the Directors are seen to think heralth and safety is important and are regularly looking for indications of good health and safety performance, then eventually the whole of the workforce will respond to this. however, ensure the sort of things that are measured don't just include accidents otherwise people will start to hide them.
This is obviously only the start and you need to develop a plan that will result in a change in actions and hopefully attitudes.
