Posted By stevehaigh Could anyone please explain the requirements of construction site managers regarding the safe egress and access of visitors during work hours. Do site managers have to do all they can to prevent unauthorised access, even if their men have to physically stop work to remove barriers which prevent access to work areas in order to continue work, eg a fork lift truck driver is stopped by a physical barrier and the driver has to dismount the truck to move it == he then drives through and dismounts again to put the barrier back in place?

If you are not offay with them request that the H&S Advisor attend site as a matter of urgency. Also get the Contaracts manager involved. You also need to look at occupirers libility. What does your company site procedures state? Regards

Posted By Mal Shiels Steve, ultimate responsibility for health and safety on construction sites rests with the principal contractor. Control of access and egress and visitors is one aspect that needs managing. Having a physical barrier, that operatives have to move to carry out work is an option and would depend upon external factors (school close by, busy high street, traffic management, and size of the construction site etc). These type of factors would influence the judgement call of the principal contractor as to what type of access controls they would use. Regards
