Posted By Neil Pearson Has anyone here seen any figures showing how much time directors should spend on health & safety? Perhaps from a survey or research amongst directors of companies who are seen as managing H&S well? Please let me know where you might have seen any figures. If you haven't seen any figures, what do you all think? How much time should a board devote to health & safety, assuming the line management pulls its weight of course? 5, 10, 20% of their agenda time? What proportion of a director's general work time? I'd be really grateful for any help here, to help build a business case.

Posted By Raymond Rapp Neil It's a very broad question as the answer will depend on a number of factors eg the safety critical nature of th work. However, it is often the case that h&s rises to the top of the agenda following an incident. Then, of course, it is discussed at great length. Ray the cynic.

Posted By Merv Newman I usually require a monthly 1-hour managment safety meeting. Followed by inclusion of safety in departmental meetings - probably totals another hour per month per manager. I then require "face time" - managers on the shop floor "walking the talk". Half an hour per week, two hours per month. Add in being prepared to listen/talk about safety whenever it comes up. Maybe another hour or two per month. If it fits the culture each senior manager will chair a safety work group. One hour per month. Total = maybe 8 hours a month for a senior manager. Most managers do at least a 50 hour week, so that comes to about 4% of management time. Merv

My boss is sure he read somewhere some figures about percentage of time directors spend on H&S, perhaps just in companies where it's managed well. In my experience it doesn't need to be very much time if you're smart about giving them the right tools and help them use some board meeting agenda time effectively. Thanks for the calculation Merv, that's the kind of thing I'm specifically looking for, but I appreciate everyone's replies. Any other data from good practice?

Posted By Merv Newman Jonathan, During post-implementation follow-up visits (up to three years of follow-up) I sit in on a management meeting and a departmental meeting about every two or three months. I also chat to the safety team, supervisors and employees. I get the monthly managment agenda and minutes including site/group stats. If they are getting it right then safety gradually permeates the whole culture of the site. If they are NOT getting it right, well, thats why I'm in the management safety meeting. I know that lots of managers don't feel they have any time to spare. So you set up a structure in which they are EXPECTED to give time to safety. After a while it becomes part of the daily routine. And there are fewer accidents to have to spend time on. And no court appearances.
