Hi All,
I currently work for a pharmaceutical company with a range of around 1000 different raw materials and therefore the theoretical need for lots of COSHH assessments!
Does anybody have experience of a similar situation and managed to develop a sytem of grouping materials for the purpose of COSHH?
Many Thanks,
Scott

COSHH assessments should be process based rather than substance based; how many processes (weighing, blending, centrifuging, etc.) are your 1000 substances used in?

Hi Paul,
Thanks for your response and I agree that COSHH assessments should be processed based and we currently consider the range of processes that our materials can be used in. We don't know what we are going to make from one minute to the next and which process we will use.
The nature of the company is that a pharmacist will call us with an unlicensed medicine that they need for an individual patient. This can be a similar preparation to one which we have made before or it could be an entirely new product. This order is produced immediately in the laboratories for next day delivery. We don't know what we are going to make from one minute to the next, until we pick up the phone and we currently have close to 10,000 different products on our books, which rises by the day.
We obviously cannot base our COSHH assessments on the individual process and therefore currently have to take into consideration everything that the substance can be used for.
Sorry for going off the point a bit Paul but I thought I should make my situation a little clearer and I hope this helps you understand my situation a little better.
Many Thanks,
Scott
