Can others offer any good examples of grass roots Health Surveillance? Especially any monitoring and recording tools which are cheap or free.
I am in the process of trying to develop up the Occupational Health section of my departmental remit with a view to having a good bit of OHU software in place sometime around 2006-2007 (as these things aren’t all that cheap).
But before then I need to build up a strategy and plan for this.
If anyone has any ideas or insights please either email me or add it in to this thread.

I have never really considered doing health surveillance on grass roots, but I suppose if your risk assessments have shown it is necessary I suppose you best do it. Seriously though a bit more info on numbers and what surveillance you require might help. We undertake Health surveillance on our staff and all we use is an Excel spreadsheet which is set up to notify the administrator when the next test is due. Fairly simple works and is cheap.

Our numbers are around 600-1000 – working in the scientific, academic and conservation sectors. Risks are from biological pathogens (animals, environment, travel etc.), as well as other risks such as diving (which requires HSE Medical every year), chemicals (cleaning products – cleaning out enclosures with bleach power-spraying), and site work (manual handling) etc.

I presume you are using the services of an occupational health specialist as its a whole separate profession normally nurse led with the input of a doctor.

Yes and no. We have OH service use for inoculation program and referrals but no active Health Surveillance program. Obviously I am extending this service however I am looking for methods others use for monitoring etc.
