Posted By Mike Doran Hi there. Can anyone tell me (or advise) on the maximum gap between decking boards? This follows a serious injury sustained where a workers foot caught between the boards (45mm). Also (!) is there a maximum step height for working in areas where space is limited (such as behind displays). I have perused the Building Reg's and phoned the HSE but to no avail! Any info or advice is gratefully recieved. Mike

Posted By Peter MacDonald I'm assuming you're talking about temporary decking rather than working platform on a scaffold. Can you elaborate? I would guess that there is no prescibed distance. However 45mm has been proven to constitute a hazard on your site so there should be no problem stating to those erecting/building/designing/constructing the decking that the gaps should be kept to a minimum ie butted up against each other and risk assess where uprights etc protrude through. If it's unsafe it's unsafe. Pete

Posted By Mike Doran Hi, thanks for the reply. The decking is actually used as a working platform in a 'confined' space (it gets better and better!) The space is behind a display area in a shop where the staff have to get access to displays. There is no risk from a fall as the walls are only about 2m apart and the deck spreads this far. My reason for asking is that I have to inform builders working on new premises not to make the gaps too wide or the 'steps' too high. I wondered if there were any actual figures to stipulate. The steps in these areas are about 450mm high and are quite simply wooden boxes. Hope this helps!
