In what trade other than health & safety do you jump directly from a basic certificate directly to degree level? NEBOSH National Diploma now being recognised as being a full degree. Where is the BTECH/ONC/HNC equivalent that the vast majority of professionals hold in the other subjects: primarily practical with some theoretical understanding, not academic based as per a degree. There is undoubtedly a need for an academic degree in the subject, however, the vast majority of practitioners both can and should be practical based people with some theoretical knowledge, but primarily biased to doing the day-to-day effectively and efficiently. Academics are not generally known as being practical, business minded and that applies to their whole working philosophy, whereas most people who are needed in business need to be. From talking to a wide range of people both fulltime safety professionals and students on NEBOSH National Diploma, it is clear that most wish to do or have done a BTECH/ONC level course in the subject as being most appropriate to what they actually do – what they are paid for. When is IOSH going to show leadership by pushing for a suitable level course? Do people agree that it’s needed?

Hi Andy,
I think the recent changes within IOSH have highlighted that the industry is heading the same way as everyone else, however it has taken time to reach the stage that we are at now.

Its not as high as a degree and I have done both frankly the degree goes into far more depth. Having said that the NEBOSH diploma is more stressful.

Hi Andy,

Many professions require degree level qualifications (and the Dip is supposed to be Level 6 as is a Bachelor degree; it is supposed to be breadth rather than depth which differ, though unlike Bigwhistle I have only done one so I don't know how closely reality reflects theory). All medical and allied health porfessionals now need degrees, as do architects, lawyers, fashion designers(!), teachers etc etc. I'm not saying that this is or is not a good thing, but H&S is just conforming with the way things have been in nearly every other profession for some years now,

John

"Academics are not generally known as being practical, business minded and that applies to their whole working philosophy..."

???

Talk about stereotyping and prejudice!! It is possible to be both. Many people are. Touch of the green-eyed monster is there?
