Posted By paul debney I have recently advertised for 4 elected employee safety reps (we are a non unionised company). Can iosh members give me a recognised training centre i can send these employees for training in the role they are to perform.

Posted By Frank Hallett Hi Paul Your best option would be to devise and present a tailored course for your reps in your business using your procedures; that way there will be no hidden training gaps or, possibly worse, your staff being trained to do things that you don't want them to do/in ways that you don't want. Posted By John Murgatroyd I'm interested in precisely what they are not wanted to do ? I assume this means that they are supposed to represent the employers needs re: H&S ? None of this stuff about actual problems....rather like my place where a director does the H&S and regards things like fume and dust tests as a BIG waste of cash ? Anyway, aren't their "duties" stated by law ? The Health and Safety (Consultation with Employees) Regulations 1996 ?

Posted By Jack Anyway, aren't their "duties" stated by law ? Well, the Regs give them a few functions re being consulted but nowhere near as extensive as the functions of union appointed reps. So, what do you actually want. Persons to carry out the functions of safety reps or simply persons to be consulted as per the 1996? I would largely go along with Frank; train them in house, but perhaps a short course with an external organisation so they are not totally 'company' people ie can (and feel confident to)challenge the orthodoxy.

Posted By John Murgatroyd Yeah, my firm thought about that. They decided that in the event of the employees wanting representation with respect to H&S they would "investigate downsizing the workforce" That was the end of that.

Posted By Mimi I'm a union H&S rep, and we find that we are far more comprehensively trained than most of the managers where I work, and for the most part, we have a good, constructive relationship. Contact the TUC for your nearest TUC studies centre, and they will be able to provide you with information on the TUC H&S stage 1, 2 and 3 course, which is excellent. Cheers, and good luck!
