Posted By bisonking Hello. I'm doing a presentation on Noise at Work (aimed at warehouse staff) on Friday. Does anyone have a good icebreaker exercise or quiz etc that might be suitable? Many thanks. Jeremy

Posted By Lorraine Shuker Make up pairs of cards with the names of animals on (ie 2 dogs, 2 cats etc) distribute these randomly to your delegates who have to find their animal partner by making the appropriate noise as loudly as possible (ie woof, meow etc). When pairs are matched they have 5 mins to interview each other and then introduce the other person to the group. If the group already know each other make the task to find out an interesting fact about the other person. Something like the "what you don't know about Jimmy is that he can walk on his hands/met the Queen/can light his own farts" The noise connection is the undoubted cacophany they make in finding each other. Have fun whatever you choose to do Also check out internet for ideas such as businessballs.com

Posted By Nigel Hammond The HSE used to do a CD that demos what it is like to be deaf. Trouble is, it's empty... No seriously, they did one that demonstrated what a pub conversation sounded like to someone young and then someone old who had been exposed to XdB for X number of years. It also had all sorts of simulations of tinitus. - not an exciting icebreaker - but something worth introducing in the day - if you can get hold of a CD from the HSE - sorry I can't remember what it was called. Another thing i used to do was demonstrate what 85dBA sounds like by lining up the delegates down one end of the room, playing a getto blaster at the other end with a recording of a pneumatic hammer. I would hold a noise meter up to where they are standing and adjust the volume with a remote. The other suggestions sound like much more fun though!

Posted By Ron Hunter A colleague recently included a photo at the beginning of his powerpoint presentation of a ship making its way through pack ice in the Antartic. "Well" he explained, "we're always being told to include icebreakers as part of our training sessions" (groan).
