Posted By James M I recently visited a fuel station for a large well-known company. The drive in computerised car wash attached to the forecourt has a display box where you type in your pin code to authorise the purchased type of wash. The instructions are displayed on the box for the driver to insert his/her code, and then drive forward until the sign tells you to stop. Now here comes the crazy part. Underneath the sign the instructions are repeated in Braille. Please tell me I have missed a trick and I have not witnessed an act of elf n safety madness? What next??

Posted By Brett Day I don't know, have seen plenty of drivers drive like they were blind ! Given that you have to have eyesight to a certain standard to drive legally, I can't see the need for the instructions to be in braille.

Posted By James M What if our friend JC got a hold of this? It would take up the whole page of his newspaper article.

Posted By Robert K Lewis James Didn't know he could read Braille!! Seems too technical a subject for him to know! Also are we all sure the braille message was identical to the plain text version!? Bob

Posted By Bill Bircham Hi All, It does sound like a typical over the top situation, but not sure if it’s H&S driven. More likely something to do with the DDA or some such ‘accessibility’ issue. As a further thought, did you actually ‘read’ the Braille perhaps it actually said something like:- “Get out of the way, you are in a car wash” R Bill

Posted By Ron Hunter The PIN Authorisation display panel is a standard piece of kit used in many other applications where braille is appropriate.

Posted By Mark Talbot Ron's explanation and our guesses shows just how easy it is for even a well-meaning journalist to get the wrong end of a health and safety stick. If we took several stabs at it to get it right, maybe I understand their blunders sometimes. As I read the replies, I had begun to think that maybe it was for left-hand drive cars with blind passengers ... we all know how common that scenario is.

Posted By James M good point Mark, that was my only explanation I could possibly come up with. Then again, how many left hand drive cars with blind or visual impaired passengers are there driving round the North East (off the beaten track- not in a town centre) with dirty cars. reasonably foreseeable? reasonably preacticable? Maybe the fuel companies have just got too much money.
