Posted By Rod McGovern Hi,
As an easy approximation to the Action Levels of the current (1989) Noise at Work Regs it was common to use the fact that if you had to raise you voice to be heard at a distance of 1m then the noise level was about 90dB(A). Similarly if the distance between speaker and listener was 2m then the approximate noise level was 85 dB(A). This implies that the noise reduced at 5dB when the distance doubles. In theory I believe that noise reduces at 6dB as the distance doubles, if well clear of ground level and 3 dB at ground level, due to noise increase from reflection. However if 5 dB is used this implies that an indication of 80dB (A) would be achieved if you have to raise your voice to be heard by someone who is 4m away. This is a less useful indicator, even if it is theoretically a good approximation. Does anyone have a better way of helping those without a noise meter to judge whether their workplace is likely to exceed the First Action level of the new regulations? Thanks, Rod

Posted By Dave Daniel As one who's been measuring noise, your comment is valid. It is very hard to detect whether 80dB(A) is reached without measurement. someone whispering in your ear could exceed it, I suspect. Any form of raised voice in your proximity would probably do it. I've just measured myself coughing lightly with the noise meter 30cm away - it reached 81 peak.... My Honda reads 79.9 cruising the motorway with the sun roof open.
Most white van drivers will need white earmuffs to match their white sticks and guide dogs - (if you dont wear 'em the HSE should complain, if you do the police will book you)
I predict much nonsense as we yet again try to apply an unrealistic law in a way which balances compliance against real life! I'll be taking earmuffs to the panto this Christmas.... Oh no, I wont!
