Posted By Kevin West Colleagues. I am aware that this topic has been discussed a number of times in the past. However, the question never seems to have been fully resolved. How do my colleagues manage to communicate safety messages to foreign drivers delivering to site. I am considering the use of a hand held translator such as the one here: http://www.edirectory.co...12+language+euro&cid=880Has anyone ever used such a device, if so how good / bad is it. Where as this type of advice may be suitable for short messages (for delivery drivers etc) what do you use / how do you communicate with Agency staff etc where English is not their first language? Thanks for your assistance. Kevin

Posted By Frank Hallett Keep it very, very simple! Just try to put youself in the drivers position of being in a [very] strange country with very limited local vocabulary. I would generally consider the use of hand-held translators to be better as the support mechanism rather than the initial interaction.
Clear signage positioned so that the driver on either isde of the cab can see it is a must; but remember that a sign that you design may not convey the message that you think it does. Signage should also be positioned so that there isn't too much information presented in one go [they are driving lorries!] and nor does it obscure other esential information.
One way systems, printed sign-boards with clear instructions and an MFI/IKEA type idiot guide for every movement will minimise the need for any uncontrolled activity out of the cab.

Posted By TBC Apart from the language, I've heard of foreign drivers forgetting that the loading bays lights are on the opposite side and trying to drive off with a green, when their side was in fact red with the bay locking arm still up. Good key control should help here. Just a thought.
