Posted By Ray Horan Can anyone please give me some information about footwear to be used when working on roofs. A safety minded QS on a site we are working on has requested we use the correct footwear. I must admit I cannot find any specific type when searching through the PPE catalogues. The only thing I can think of is that maybe the QS is making reference to rigger boots and their lack of ankle support. You help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance

Why don't you ask the QS what he means?

Posted By Ray Horan Paul, Thank you for the reply. I presume you don't know of any specific footwear?

Posted By Alan Woodage Ray, My only thought to your question is that on some single ply membrane roofing systems (SARNA TROCAL) the use of non marking soles is prefered as black rubber soles tend to mark the finished product. Ultimately we come back to Risk Assesment from the roofers point of view. Without knowledge of the site or roof products being used I can be of no more assistance. Possibly your QS should stick to counting on his abacus and select contractors who are not the cheapest, or slashing costs from the prelims of reputable contractors who make allowances for safety, to carry out the work and then our lives would be easier and the world of construction would be safer.

Posted By Sean McMahon I'm not sure which issue, but a recent SHP in the new products section had some new high tech safety shoes which on reflection may be just what is required for roofing work.

Posted By Chris Pope Trainers can be supplied with toecaps, and most roofers prefer to wear these as they flex better when working on pitched roofs, they also can have a better non slip sole.

Posted By Jonathan Sandler CMIOSH Chris Pope nicked my line honest! Non Slip Safety Trainers are ok, they donot damage the roofing stuff. But not Rebok or addidas, they don't make safety footwear. Regards
