Posted By steven bentham Raj Assuming you are not attempting it yourself (otherwise you would'nt be asking the question!). (1) Appoint a competent crane erector; (2) Appoint a competent mobile crane company to organise and plan the lifting operations; Make sure they supply a lifting plan along with trained banksmen. (3) Close area or apply for road closure around tower crane during erection and dismantling. Make sure the Principal Contractor allows for a good base for the mobile crane to sit on and keep all the rest out of the operations. Stand well back and watch specialists and professionals work.

Posted By Jerry Lucey Hi Raj, You should look for a well thought out method statement from the crane erection/ dismantling contractor and in general the following should be included; 1/. Craneage - siting of the crane in relation to the crane to be worked on, pedestrian routes etc. ensuring that access/ egress to the site is considered. 2/. Transport and delivering/ removing crane sections from site. Where possible all lifting and loading/ unloading should take place within the site and well away from the public. 3/. Timing of operation. This type of work is often undertaken at weekends when the site can be given over the the crane erection/ dismantling contractor. 4/. Weather conditions. For this operation the crane may need to be locked in position in order for the sections to be tied/ untied. Windy conditions will create a hazard in this respect. 5/. Prevention of falls from height. It is important that operatives involved in this operation use the appropriate personal protective equipment. 6/. Exclusion zones. Ensure that there is an adequate exclusion zone to guard against items falling from height. Bolts which hold the sections together often have to be hammered out sometimes using sledge hammers and chisels and this presents the risk of bolts or tools falling from height. 7/. Banksmen/ slinger signallers. It is worth remembering that personnel on the ground and at height will need to direct the crane operator. There needs to be enough trained slinger/ signallers available. 8/. If the dismantling/ erection operation extends into a second day the crane needs to be left in a secure state overnight. 9/. Certification. System for ensuring that the crane is certified before being used for normal lifts. Just some thoughts on what need to be considered in the method statement.
