Posted By AlB A company under our respomnsibility needs to lift a gantry crane into place and install it. They have informed us that they want to use two forklifts in a tandme lift to lift the gantry into place!! They say that due to height restrictions they will not be able to get a crane to lift the gantry into place.
Comments please!!!!

Posted By Jerry Lucey Good morning.
I always try to avoid tandem lifts, however it sounds like you may have a situation where this is unavoidable. Just one thing you need to examine, is the tandem lift due to weight of the crane or the width of the crane making it ackward to balance on the forks? you have probably already examined the possibility of a lift truck with a greater lifting capacity and the possibility of securing the crane to the truck's forks while being lifted into place. If not it would be worth examining as part of your risk assessment.
If a tandem lift is necessary it needs to be very carefully co-ordinated, perhaps with a competent person directing from the ground with access to both operators. It is also worth carrying out some sort of of familiarisation training with both operators prior to the lift. This is a requirement under the Code of Practice.

Posted By Jerry Lucey It is also worth remembering that you are probably dealing with a metal to metal surface with such a lift and the added risk of the load sliding in the event of sharp brakeage etc.

Posted By Martin13 Agree with Jerry, Also consider if possible either a Jib mounted Forklift ( FLT) or Jib mounted attachment as they will sling the load, forks are not designed to hang slings off. Same principal of crane tipping will apply here if the load moves off the centre of gravity, Fulcrim point and all that. Ensure the FLT's are of the same SWL

Posted By Robert K Lewis There are a number of lifting devices available that can do this sort of job and which can be fitted in to any space you can get a forklift. Better still they are designed for jobs like this. They run slow enough to have time to signal the operatives if one runs faster than the other.
The responses concerning metal to metal are well worth remembering in assessing any methods of risk control to be employed.

Posted By AlB Just an update following - we opted for a tandem CT crane lift in the end and worked fine.
Thanks for the input!!!
