Posted By Joe Quinn I'm looking for a bit of input on toluene. EH40/2005 gives the risk phrase R63 - possible risk of harm to the unborn child. The ASL of 2002 doesn't have this risk phrase so I guess it is new. The ASL does, however, give R20 - harmful by inhalation at concentrations >12.5%. My question is at what concentration does R63 apply. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Regards, Joe

Posted By Paul Leadbetter Joe What the ASL is saying, I think, is that for liquid formulations containing >12.5% of toluene, the formulation must be marked as harmful by inhalation, as high concentrations of toluene in air will affect the central nervous system. What R63 is saying, I think, is that any exposure to toluene, whether by skin contact (as toluene has a 'skin' notation in EH40) or inhalation, carries a risk of harm to the unborn child; the greater the exposure, the greater the risk. Given the understandably emotive nature of the risk, you would surely want to keep exposures very low. Paul
