Posted By Tony Gladman Just wondering if anyone has completed the distance learning PGC or PGD with Portsmouth University (or any other institution). I'm considering this or similar course (open to advice) later this year. Unfortunately Ports Uni website is not functioning fully and some of the detail seems out of date. Regards Tony

Posted By Jonathan Sandler CMIOSH As with most students attending the opening address by the Don goes something like this; 'When they said you read a lot, by the time you have finished this your degree, you would have read about one million words.' Sounds easy, six essays, one disscertation of 20k words, one presentation, easy. Work Monday to Friday 9-5, go home, if married with kids, spend about 90 mins with them, then start on course work from 8pm - 11.30pm the earliest. Rush to get essay in on time, but can not, request extention, now whole course is now put in delay. Essay get poor mark redo essay, just scrape through second time around. Get the picture, good. If you dont do the course, regardless if either PGD MSc etc, you might just regret it. When you finished well 'yours is world' Hard work will be rewarded it is worth the stress. Cheaper than NEBOSH diploma part 1&2, higher pass rate as well.

Posted By Richie Tony, Like any other distance learning, the course can get tough around essay deadline time. That said, it is no tougher than most other courses of it's type. I am just finishing the PGD, having recently undertaken the (residential) research methods course. I have to say that the first year was mainly confirmed learning, with the PgD half confirmed and half new learning. What they have given me though is the confidence to question the given wisdom of my peers and the HSE. It is the mantra of the Uni that achieving the HSE COPs/Guidance achieves only the bare minimum. There is also the requirement for someone to devise the COPs and Guidance documents. This is where the graduates with commercial experience come in. It's not everyone's cup of tea, but if you want to stretch the boundaries this should give you the confidence to do so. Richie.

Posted By Jerry Lucey Hi Tony, Having recently completed the Msc through the distance learning programme at University of Portsmouth I have the following observations. While assignments are tough and some of the feedback on drafts can be disheartening the support you get to achieve a result worthy of your efforts is very good. It is very easy to misread an assignment question, even with guidance but dont be disheartened as you will get the guidance you need. Examinations were my greatest fear at the outset. I did find the question paper format and the phrasing of questions very good. You dont have to de-cipher the question and it is very clear what is being asked. The marking appears to be common sense. I was impressed with how favorably employers look on the qualification and the University appears to have a reputation. I would recommend the course and would certainly look to University of Portsmouth if I am looking at completing a distance learning course in the future if they are offering the course I require.

Posted By Patrick Keady My experience of Portsmouth (Poly, as was)was excellent. I completed the NEBOSH Diploma (as was) in 1992. Bearing in mind that this was in the pre-Internet/DVD days, I was very impressed with the quality, comprehensiveness and formats of the study materials - excellent notes/books (written by Portsmouth), videos and audio cassettes. The grapevine tells me that Portsmouth continues to be innovative in the quality and delivery of their courses and they are good value for money too. Best wishes with your studies.
