What are the precautions for the handling of blood spillages by cleaners( contractors in shopping centre)? they have received their hepatitis injections and are specifically trained. What other pro-active measures are recommended to be implemented? Management are still concerned with regard the remote chance of a major blood spillage. are there any good websites regarding this topic?

Posted By Andrew Beveridge We use body spill kits (called 'Bio Hazard kits'); they come complete with gloves, aprons, absorbent granules and bio hazard waste disposal bages etc.
We have one open that we use for training the staff, and others available where they may be needed.
Available from lots of places; I use St John Ambulance supplies (www.sja.org.uk)
No affiliation, just a happy customer.
Hope this helps. Regards Andy

Some thoughts on control measures. Have issued this advise to clients in past;
* Treat all blood and other body fluids as infectious. * Wear impermeable, disposable overalls and gloves and dispose of, following local council procedures, after use. * Cover any cuts, scratches or abrasions with a waterproof adhesive plaster before starting to clean up spills. * Cover the blood and other body fluid spill with a fire retardant absorbent material. * Mechanically (or manually) brush up absorbent material once the fluids have been soaked up. * Dispose of absorbent material following local council procedures. * Wash immediately and thoroughly where there has been accidental contact with the blood or body fluid. * Medical advice is to be sought where exposure to bloodborne pathogens is suspected. * Wash contaminated laundry thoroughly before re-use.
Best wishes Ciaran

Posted By tony1 Just a question... Would you consider the cleaners as a high risk catagory and encourage vaccination of hepatitis?
