Posted By AlB With construction work it is necessary to have a handrail at a minimum 950mm height and a gap of no more than 470mm between the top rail and any intermediate rail. However, I can not find any definitive guidelines for the minimum requirements for a fixed edge protection on a permanent mezzanine floor in a manufacturing environment. I am presuming that the same minimum standards apply, but I don't want to jump the gun and inform our design team that they need to re-make their edge protection if this is not the case! Thanks, AlB

Posted By Jonathan Sandler CMIOSH I would seek designer risk assessment and ask them under reg 13 CDM, and also WAH regs, might ask building control bods at LA'a for their input. It might be that there the designers control measures need reassessing? Just a thought. Regards

Posted By Mike Draper AlB I recommend EEMUA publication 105:02. http://www.eemua.co.uk/p_general.htm This reproduces in handbook form the text of a handful of standards. However, to answer the specific question, the handrail around a platform would be at a height of 1100mm to the top of the top rail, a mid rail at approximately half that and a kick-plate or toe-plate of at least 150mm height above the floor. And yes, this is quite different to the requirements in WAH .... Mike

Posted By AlB Thanks for the reply. Mike - exactly what I was after, and I'm pleased to say that the spec therefore fits the bill. Cheers!

Posted By Alan Woodage Very simply the mezzanine floor is a permanent structure and if it is to be accessed for work purposes then it must comply with Part K of the building regulations and it would be my expectation to see a handrail at 1.1M including a midrail and a skirting / toe board of at least 150mm. Also this needs to be looked at with the consideration of the horizontal load to be applied and possiblity of vehicular loads,i.e trolleys or pallet trucks etc. Hope this helps

Posted By ITK The only specific mention of heights are relating to construction activities, apparently building regs still quote the 1100mm standard and can be used as best practice.

Posted By steven bentham During construction the above are of course correct. During occupation they are subject to the Building Regs; if members of the public are present then the max openings are 100 mm
